Octave pedal usage

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently bought a MXR M288 bass octave deluxe and I'm really enjoying it. I've only used once so far in a covers set for a Muse cover where I set the dry and both octave levels (as the M288 has the growl and girth octave knobs) to 12:00, the same level. Sounded great, especially with the fuzz.

We will all use a variety of octave pedals so settings wont be the same but for a snapshot of octave pedal usage what do you use an octave effect for, and what settings, or ratio between dry and octave, do you use?

i use sub octave mostly to make things uberfat down low. the Ampeg SubOctave is great for that. i run the Octave louder than the dry signal and into a Fuzz nine times out of ten. in terms of upper octaves, i use a Whammy set to one octave up and an EHX HOG for just about everything in that field.

Octave down in parallel with a bandpass or highpass envelope filter. Dear lord I love that sound.

I either run full dry + full 1 octave down into my Moog Freqbox to get a phat, dirty synth sound or full dry + 1 octave down + 5th up + 1 octave up + original + 2 octaves in a big muff clone for a full, loud, in-your-face sound that I will shift with octave up expression footswitch.

Octaves really add depth and dimension to my sound. The HOG is my used most on my board after the big muff which is one 98% of the time.

I use a Digitech Bass Synth Wah, I run it mixed pretty heavily towards the octave down, and run it for some the dance/rap stuff I do. "In Da Club", "Gin and Juice", "Party in the USA", "Just Dance", sometimes "Don't Stop til You Get Enough". It's a fun band!

I have the aggie octaver and I use it sparingly. like a 70/30 clean/octave and usually leave it one for a full tune - used it on a few originals and a few covers in my last band. covers like Stevie Wonder - I Wish, Justin Timberlake - Love Stoned (man that song SUCKS!!) and MJ's Dirty Diana to name a few.

I dig it, but could totally live w/o it!

I mainly use mine to get a pseudo synth or organ bass tone and play the lines an octave up.
