Uhhhh, did you want anything to do with wahs? Or did you just want a good octaver to get close to guitar sounds?

I find its very hard (near impossible) to get your bass to sound like a clean guitar with any stompbox. However, running a good overdrive or fuzz after the octave up can get you a pretty good dirty guitar tone. I use a digitech whammy for octave up, then follow that with my turbo rat for a close driven guitar sound.

Keep in mind that most octave ups don't track well for more than one note. Try harmonizers if you wanted to play chords.

In answer to your question, yes you can buy a pedal that will get you into the higher registers, but it comes with downsides.

Here's some popular well known octavers:

Digitech Whammy
Boss PS-6
EHX POG and POG-2

thank you!

for the reply,,after i made the post i thought=yes they make pedals(stompbox),and of couse digi FX,i was thinking i could do my bass tones then jump a pedal and add some fill guitarish tones(when i want em,instantly returning to correct octave using my foot) i don't even`care' about guitars any more, havent owned one in 6 months but it would be cool to get bit brighter when i want it and retain my EQ settings(for the thump

couple things i'll mention,i have the `dead fret issue' on both my basses G strings, even the fretless!,5th frets you just groan to yourself and the 6th fret(s) decay fast,,,both mexi J fretless and P fretted, and>

like i say i jam alone a lot,i have a couple pedals currently a DOD fuzz witch i use for grit/bass boost but the Jazz really loves that pedal it's a keeper(and i'm still enjoying chasing tones with it and a digitech Hot Head witch seems to suit the P better(havent had it very long)had,,then sold all that i had, just started buying again(pedals)

i just like to `donk around' chasing tones,i'm not a slap(er) nor do i seek to do `solos' per se,mostly 70's rock, western swing, honky tonk, bluegrass, cowgrass,,,i'll jam with `Skynyrd' for hours on end,i have absoluly nothing against any gonre/style AT ALL

but when i play with others i play BASS. plain and simple that's what i'm there to do(for them)and that's almost always strait-up bass tones(playing fuzz at the local`senior center'open mic night would win me any praisehahahaha

there's times for`distortion' as well as clean tones=it's all good

anyway thanks a million i'll find something to play with

OK NOT EDITING,post may seem confusing, had to stop mid-post for a passing 25YO`child' who wandered thru the house,,,,sorry for the ramble=peace

I'm finding your posts...opaque, so providing guidance of any value is difficult. Are you seeking a treadle operated pitch-shifting effect, like a Digitech Whammy, or are you just after an octave-up effect that you can stomp in and out? What type of sound are you after with this effect, clean or dirty? What's your price range?

Steely's posts are always stream of consciousness type affairs. I actually quite enjoy the challenge of deciphering them. I think he got the answer he was looking for before anyone replied though.

That said,...if I were a geriatric at the senior center I'd love it if someone came in and jammed on a cranked fuzzbass. I hope when I'm a old guy I can still do the same.
