OD? Fuzz? Something else?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everybody. I play P basses (dual coil and SC) into an old Ampeg V4 tube amp and an Avatar 212 cab. We're a 3 piece band playing typical small to medium bar gigs. Our music has been called 'country grunge' as it's a bit dirtier than typical country rock. I'm thinking I'd like to try a pedal to dirty up my sound a bit on some heavier songs but I don't want to break the bank. I don't really have any particular sound in mind and I'm not too familiar with pedals so I'm not really sure what to even start looking for. Any suggestions? Soundclips?

Thanks!

Going against what I stand for im goin to say that it sounds like an OD would suit you better than a fuzz. You should be able to get some pretty good OD from your amp, but just do a search on overdrive and you will see endless possibilities.

Digitech Bad Monkey is a good bet for a dirt cheap but great sounding OD. Probably more useable than fuzz for 'country grunge', and sounds great being pushed into a tube amp.

Thanks. I was assuming an OD might be what I'm looking for--something to push the tubes into a natural grind. The Bad Monkey is one that I've seen recommended many times and I'm looking into it.

I'm reading through a bunch of old threads, too, and I appreciate all suggestions.

Thanks, Snakeman1066. I saw your big thread about that pedal and it does sound good.

I'm leaning towards a Bad Monkey right now because it gets fairly good reviews from most folks (not always the best but always pretty good) and it's cheap. Looks like it'll be a good place to start to see if I like messing with pedals and sounds.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now, off to see if I can find a used BM for a good price.

Look out for a second-hand modded one on here. The Humphrey modded version has more low end and sounds better than the stock one.

Thanks dannybuoy. That's the one I'm looking for. My understanding is that Humphrey makes 2 mod versions, one specifically for bass, and that's the one I'm keeping my eyes out for.

I may grab a stock one if I see one, though, and have a go at modding it myself. I've seen a few mod ideas floating around for this pedal. I guess it just depends on what I come across and how I'm feeling at the time.

Boss os-2 Overdrive Distortion
sounds great
built like a tank
drive or distortion or both
available way cheap used.

gives you time to save for and spec out the boutique pedal you'll really want...like, say, the Pigtronix Disnortion.

cause you would probably wet yourself if you were to play with it.
