OK so,,listening to G Thorougood on U-Tube-Hiway/49,man!,the bassman is the CAT,he's layin down some thick tone,i want some of that!,WHY?,when i walk out and plug i i cannot seem to find as THICK ,FAT a!! a tone as his(yes i had a couple ales tonight and am NOT ASHAMED

)

i also(i guess as a secondary question want to ask) what pedals would YOU consider mandatory to gig with

Beer Bar gig = Precision.

I'd prob'ly use my SansAmp Bass Driver DI as well as my MarkBass SA450 is a tad clean.

Looking at your profile I'd say you need an amp.
A P bass might be more appropriate to the vibe your describing but a J should work fine.
There are no mandatory effects but a Sansamp BDDI might help.
