Can i leave the batteries in pedals on my pedalboard that get their juice from a powersupply, in case of a malfuntion? Or will the battery eventually explode or something?

It's fine, so long as you check them periodically. Shouldn't be an issue, unless they're alkaline batteries, or if you're talking about loooong term, (2 yrs +).

I would take them out. Many pedals will drain the battery when you have something plugged into the input jack. Some might disconnect the battery when you plug in DC power, but I don't know how common that is.

My understanding is that is the standard or at least the design is flawed if that is not the case.

I've heard that too, I just don't understand how it would work. From looking at wiring diagrams, it always looks like the battery would be connected no matter what, but maybe it's just that I don't get it!

i have batteries in all my pedals all the time but i use a daisy chain to power them almost always. batteries act as backup power sources

There is a jumper integral to the DC in jack that makes contact from the + battery terminal to the + connection on the DC in (the two red dots on the 2.1mm jack in the Beavis diagram). When you plug in your power connector the jumper gets pushed open removing the battery from the circuit.

Yeah, it has to disconnect the battery when a power supply is plugged in, otherwise the power supply will be forced to try and charge the battery and although it is possible to recharge off-the-shelf alkaline and zinc carbon batteries...it certainly isn't advisable, especially with your pedal power supply!
