Only one effect pedal for metal music

I am not talking about those multi-effects here.

If you can have only one compact effect paddle, what would you get for rock and metal music?

Are you talking out of what we own currently, or if we were going to buy one pedal specifically to play rock & metal music?

Out of what I currently own, I'd probably say my Danelectro Black Paisley Liquid Metal Distortion pedal. It's got an Bass/Treble EQ, a Mid Cut/Flat/Boost switch, a Distortion, a switch that can make the signal an octave lower, and with the Level knob up and the Distortion knob down at about 1, it sounds like a pretty sweet Overdrive.

If it's out of any pedal in the world, I don't know if I could narrow it down to just one.

To the OP.

If you were as young and naive I was when I was 17. Pick up a Metal Zone (MT-2 from Boss).

Actually, the pedal worked great on bass. If you also wanted to sound like a lead guitar.

I couldn't live without my Ibanez Phat Hed now.
And I'm expecting much from the Ibanez SB-7 that I ordered.
Hey, those ToneLok pedal look like they were designed for metal.

Serious though:
Many bassists have proven that you don't need a pedal for metal.
But if there is one pedal that is necessary: the Boss GEB-7 Bass Equalizer.
Shaping a sharp sound is very important.

Tuner... who cares how awesome that distortion is or how good that toneshaping pedal makes your bass sound, as long as you're out of tune it still comes out wrong.

Lighten up. Suggesting a tuner as "effect" pedal is a common joke.

The only way a tuner can be considered an effect pedal is if it automaticly tracks down your detuned note and then changes the pitch to produce the right note.
So far I have not found such pedal. Would be great on a fretless I guess.

you can get away without a tuner or distortion. cause you can always overdrive your amp, and use a piano or something to tune.

I'd have to go with filter pedal, specifically a Moog Murf. lots of tonal options.

I play in a metal band, and I find that adding effects actually prevents your bass sound from cutting through the guitars, in fact it can get lost in there somewhere, especially if you drop tune from concert pitch.

I find that a good graphic EQ and some time spent experimenting with different tonal qualities works for me, but I suppose we're all different and of course there are different types of metal.

For metal, you´ll need a downtuner.

Actually I wouldn´t really bother because you´ll get drowned out by the guitars anyway.

First off, what is your current setup? Do you have an amp that can get a bit of good-sounding grit or is it only a clean amp?

Also, what kind of metal are you looking to play? Certain genres of metal lend themselves to cool effects, but other types are best off played clean.

In general, a decent dirt pedal will go a long way towards helping you get different textures. I really like my Digitech Bad Monkey, which is dirt cheap and easy to find.

Noooooooooo!

Metal bass players need to be able to cut through a dense mix. Cutting through on bass comes from having substantial mids. The Big Muff robs you of mids. Thus Big Muff =/= metal

My suggestion for metal? No effects, but rather a burly amp, new strings and a pick.

boss GEB7
it works for every genre
if your amp already has a nice graphic EQ
maybe a tuner pedal(not an fx) could be very practical
or a bass overdrive like the boss, used properly it can create nice growly tone
