A common subject around these parts,....Try a search, but for me I love my Earthbound Audio Supercollider, which is an overpriced (but great sounding) Muff.

Do you recall what you have tried?

I love muffs. Do you have a price range in mind?

I really like my Pigtronix OFO Disnortion.

I mostly use it for overdrive but the fuzz is a lot of fun and the drive/fuzz are in parallel so it's really great for tweaking the distortion timbre.

I've grown to like my Pigtronix as well. But it's a pretty tame fuzz, lets quite a bit of the original through to my ears, and is musical... but tame, compared to a muff's crazy fuzz. The octava gives a nice fullness, while also being pretty tame. Someone else correctly pointed out the octava gives a small amount of gating as well, though nothing significant like an actual gated fuzz, but definitely constricts the fuzz. Overall a good, but tame, product. The main downside is the size of the box. But if you're genuinely going to use the OD and Octavia I guess that's not an issue.

I mostly use a mild overdrive, or at most, a little distortion. But, not long ago, I had a Zvex Fuzz Factory. A little bit hard to tame at times, but if you want some bristly fur on your fuzz, it's an all out tiny pedal of mass destruction. Too much for me, maybe right up your alley.

I actually JUST picked up the EHX Bass Big Muff today. There isn't one in any GC for 50 miles or any other stores except this one very small store I found.

Anyway I love it and it's just the sound I've been looking for. I would say very good for new to intermediate levels. It's not super high end but it's still great.

IF you want to cut through a live mix then it's hard to beat a

Roger Mayer Voodoo Bass

... Be prepaired to pay the price though

Depending on what pedal you get, you may lose some low end (ex - Proco RAT).

Muffs generally sap some mids (which helps you shine through pesky g****rs). Some muffs take way more mids than others. I prefer mine in the loop of a blender to keep some of my clean signal in with the muff to preserve some of the lows and mids.

Tubescreamers sap low end, but there are pedals that are "bass versions" of tubescreamers that will preserve low end and drive a tube amp very well.

You'll need to search a lot on this forum, listen to clips in the wiki on here, visit pedal makers' websites, watch youtube, and try pedals out at stores if you can.

OP, if you want it on the cheap its hard to beat either the Bass Big Muff or the Russian Big Muff Pi, and they should definitely either have those on hand or be able to get one in without much difficulty at any store you visit.
