Oteil's boxes

Sign in to disble this ad
I saw Oteil recently and he was using a OC-2 octave box and a envelope filter of some kind; a search seems to indicate a MXR Auto-Q, but somehow, that doesn't seem like what I remember. He was, well, Oteil, and a just excellent band. Don't know why these guys don't get more recognition. Couldn't stop smiling all night. Any help? Thanks!

He could have a deal to say he uses X product and then actually use Y product on stage. I'm no authority, don't take my word for it.

I think he also uses a Digitech Talker, which is a discontinued but still very popular vocoder. It's like a modern Talkbox. I used to own one they're very fun.

Thanks for the replies; no, i actually saw his set up, it was a small club. it's very simple, the octave box, a envelope filter of some kind, and that's it, he used it sparely and with great effect. just can't remember what the other box was, may well have been a MXR. Can't seem to find it anywhere, he doesn't seem to be big on posting his gear. Thanks!

Boss OC-3, MXR Bass Auto-Q M188. That's it. The "talkbox" effect is just his voice scatting over the bass solos.

I have no idea about his effects, but Oteil is the bomb. I saw him live once about 10 years ago with Aquarium Rescue Unit (Schleigho opened for them, and jammed on a few songs... Another of my favorite bands that don't get enough recognition). He's such a great player, and the scat solo is such a unique "voice" that I don't believe anyone else is doing. So many people go on and on about Wooten being the best, I'll take Oteil any day (although Wooten is undeniably a master). When I listen to Wooten I'm in awe of the technical ability, and I cringe at the cheese. I listen to Oteil and I'm just in awe.

On Victor Bailey's debut recording "Bottoms Up" (1989) he's doing some vocal scatting that's very similar to what Oteil has become more famous for.

Oteil is my favorite bass player on the planet. I feel he's the most musical bass soloist (though he doesn't solo as much as you might think), and 90% of his solos could be played beautifully on another instrument. Sometimes, certain guys get so chopsy and techniquish with the solos, it becomes not musical anymore. Oteil plays beautiful music, he just happens to play it with a 6-string bass. John Pattitucci is another one I put in that category, although I prefer Oteil's funk/rock oriented style to John's classical voice.
