Other uses for distortion pedals

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys I use to use a BOSS Distortion pedal, the cheap orange one. BUT I moved on up to a BOSS ODB-3 overdrive pedal today but I'd like to use the orange one still, but not for the same (but crappier) sound. Here's an example of what I mean, but with envelope filters... I use to have a DOD fx25b but moved up to a EHX micro Q-tron. The Q-tron became my main envelope filter of course, but I kept the DOD and used it for a completely different sound. I turned down the sensitivity knob to 0 so it ended up giving me a thuddy sound.. like a dub sound as I've heard someone say. Any who, if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear it. Thanks everyone

I have no idea what you're asking.

An envelope filter can get an auto wah sound OR if set right a low bassy dub sound. I want to know if anyone has a secondary use for a simple distortion pedal because I don't wanna have to just not use it.

So you want to get a crappier sound out of a DS-1 [if that is what you have]?

Different levels of distortion maybe? Use the ODB-3 to get your preferred sound i guess..then the cheap orange one as maybe a crunchy tone? it's your preference. it's hard to answer your question if you don't tell us what kinda of music you play or anything...

Not a crappier sound, a different sound. Like I look at peoples boards and see an overdrive pedal then a distortion then say muff and other pedals that seem to get the same sound which is distortion, and I wonder why.. But anyways I play indie/funk/alternative.

OK try this. Run the old one into the ODB-3, and see if you like what happens. Try it the other way round as well.

Turn the distortion all the way off and use the level and tone controls for a clean boost. I don't know how good it would sound or how well it would work,...but that's an alternate use for a distortion pedal <shrugs>

One will react to the other in different ways and there for give you another sound.

Experiment! Try everything in every way. Experiment! That is what FXs are for!

You mean put them both on at the same time but have one behind the other in the signal chain then switch them in order?

That is an interesting idea! Not sure if it'll work but I'll give it a try. Thank you

Didn't work, some distortion was still there, but thanks for the idea bud.

I love mixing pedals but I could never use whatever sound I get in a song because hitting two pedals at once is very difficult lol unless you have some sort of technique for doing so?

hmm probably works better with OD pedals. I have the SD-2 Dual Overdrive and I'm able to make that arrangement work on the "Crunch" setting.

the ds-1 needs some modding to be good for bass, but its alternate uses are

clean boost
slight overdrive (ive used one as a tube screamer, good results)
crappy lo-fi distorted sound. (turn the tone knob way up, it'll get thin and nasty)
mute pedal (turn everything off)
