Is the output on the OptoStomp a little low?

I just got my Opto Stomp today and it sounds great just the amount of compression I wanted. It does seem that I turn the volume up a bit high to get unity, between for comp and volume 6-7 even with the pad off. Is this unusual?

Mine is like that as well, I assume it's normal.

Same here....both knobs end up at 1:30 - 2:00.

I actually have to keep the volume on the pedal dimed with the pad off for unity, with a hot active bass. The local distributor compared mine to other units and told me they're all alike.

So strange... the one I reviewed a few years ago did not have this low output problem at all, but I've seen so many recent comments about low output that I have to assume the design has changed. I'll make a note of it in my review.

With the compressor knob set at what? The OS is very subtle so if you're looking for the audible squash 'n swell, pump 'n breathe, etc., it ain't gonna happen....not even at the higher compression settings (above 2:00). However, what you will see is major output attenutation which may explain why the volume is dimed. Suffice it to say, you may want to consider a different unit based on your needs.

Sidenote: My Carl Martin compressor was one of the best when it came to giving a clear, undestandable representation of the interaction amongst compression ratio, attack time, release time, and make-up gain. Nice sounding unit, too!

That's a very good point! I wonder if all of these low-output problems are caused by people setting the compression to max?

Yup, that was my experience with the opto-stomp as well. Good pedal, just a little quite.
Make sure you don't have the active switch on. Good pedal, but I traded mine for the Diamond bass comp, which is just as yellow but sounds better in every subtle way!

I do keep the settings between 6-7 or about 2:00 for both the comp and volume, that is just at the knee point to my ear, smooths out any transients and adds just a touch of sustain. I am just used to getting unity with lower settings on preamps and distortion pedals.

I've never had volume issues with comp below 3. Actually, I used to use it as a clean boost with comp set low.

Only just dug up the thread and noticed the new replies -

I keep the comp at about 11 o'clock with the pad off and have to keep the vol almost dimed.
