Intrigued by fuzz pedals at the moment, but the only use I see for them when I switch it on it's from going to smooth analog signal to OMG WHY'D YOU PUNCH MY BABY IN THE FACE YOU MEAN HUMAN! ...or other.

thoughts....

Fuzz is the extreme end of the overdrive, distortion family of effects. Many subtle flavors to choose, as well as more grindy "medium" effects, and right on up to all-out-fuzz.

I've gathered that most can do a continuously gaining sound but is there one that will make a louder fuzzier sound then any other.

My Way Huge Swollen Pickle does exactly what you describe. I have it set for a "Run for your lives!!! His amp's about to BLOW!!!!!" type sound.

Which version do you use?

This is the same thing I use my Swollen Pickle for at the moment. My main sound is the overdriven channel on my amp and I kick the Pickle for extra heavy parts of a few songs.

I recently tried it with the sustain dialed back a bit with my clean channel\no compressor and found an awesome fuzz tone that could be used for an entire song.

One of your most inexpensive options for getting that sound is with an A/B switch. Connect the A/B switch to a serious (~300w) tube amp with the Master around 10 and the preamp set on the higher/breaking up side and babies will be punched in the face all over the block.

How is it inexpensive to add a whole other amp/cab to your rig?

If I had to pick one fuzz ever, it'd be a year4545. Because it does so much upfunking to your signal, and it's extreme. A lot of people are playing more electronic-sounding stuff nowadays, in which synthy/fuzzy bass is quite common, too. Honestly, if adding dirt doesn't "make sense" to you, start with a nice, dynamic overdrive. Start playing it, then CRANK the gain.

i use the iron ether oxide and create sounds somewhere along the lines of "A TOUR BUS JUST CRASHED THROUGH THE VENUE WALL AND IT IS FILLED WITH ZOMBIES AND THEY ARE VERY ANGRY AND HUNGRY ZOMBIES AND WE HAVE PLUMP JUICY BRAINS RIPE FOR HARVESTING"

I found the Full Custom Repair Barnacle was downright nastey. I loved how brutal it got. I just couldn't get anything subtle from it, though, and shipped it off.

I was at a metal show last year in a small venue in San Francisco and the bass player had 9 different dist/fuzz pedals on at the same time for a song and his amp was spewing smoke. Wasn't sure if it was an stage effect or real trouble.
I heard people say "ah freakin cool" and I, myself, thought "wow, cool man, your amps freakin on fire". My second thought was "hey, wheres the nearest exit"?
