Should I get the Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Bass Driver for my overdrive/fuzz or should I get the MXR M-181 Bass Blowtorch Overdrive Distortion Pedal. If not, got any other suggestions? I really want a crunchy tone, and many tone options. Would love help with this one! |

The Sansamp has some great crunch, but to me it still sounds a lot smoother/warmer. I played a Blowtorch at a local shop and instantly knew it wasn't for me. It felt like it was a much more over-the-top pedal... a little too buzzsaw-ish for my taste, but that's just me.
As usual with questions like this, I'd suggest playing both (if you can) and picking the one that you like best.

It's pretty much a buzzsaw fuzz in all aspects. You can get a great variety of sounds from it, but they all relate to fuzz- not a grinding overdrive pedal for sure. |

| | | | Just ordered my Tech21 XXL Bass Edition Just ordered my Tech21 XXL Bass Edition... it sounded a hell of a lot better than the Blowtorch (although... it is purely down to taste)... search for threads on talkbass.com. The Tech21 XXL Bass Edition sounds warm, maintains tonal punch and has an exquisite crunch... I'll be using this pedal as my dirty channel... |

Not my favorite overdrive but far better than the blowtorch IMHO.
If you can find one (good freakin' luck though), get an old Ibanez Bass Stack pedal. They're hard to find, but imagine a Tube Screamer for bass....

But, they seem to sell it as an OD, so I guess some people will refer to it as an OD.
EDIT: Just did a search and they market it as an 'Overdrive Distortion'

"Buzzsaw" isn't often a term used to describe a "typical" fuzz pedal... that's probably why it's marketed as an overdrive pedal (which, IMHO, it's far from being).
I define it as an unusual fuzz.
