Overdrive only on E-string... Help?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,
I am not sure if this is right folder to open this thread
but here we go...

I have done some search on this topic but not much luck

I have got a MIJ 75 RI Jazz Bass (93-94).
and E sting felt a bit louder than others
whenever I record on laptop, E-string had around 1.5 times the wave amplitude than others

Based on talkbass search,
this could be pickups adjustment or shabby string..

Recently I have got my Ebs Microbass
and trying out this Overdrive on Channel B

Drive knob at noon
Only E-string distorts and none of others..
I have to play others a bit more aggressively to get a descent distortion.

This could be the louder E-string triggers the overdrive

Is this common that E-string is louder and peak high?

It sounds like your pickup(s) is/are too close to your E string. Just a few quick turns from the appropriate screw driver and you'll be good to go.

Notes played on the E string usually have a naturally higher amplitude for obvious reasons (it gives you the lowest notes on a typical 4-string, after all!), but if it's too imbalanced, a simple pickup height adjustment should help. Just lower the pickup on the E-string side by turning the screw down. Just a little should do the trick. Slight turn, play notes to test, repeat until satisfied.

Alternatively, the other end of the pickup (G-string) could be too low as well, and you can raise it a bit to compensate.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever had the bass professionally set up, or have you ever done it yourself? I ask because if you have volume differences between strings that are larger than they should be, then adjusting individual string height would be the next step. Of course, if you go that way, you may as well get a full setup done to ensure proper intonation. I don't think you'll need to go that far, but if you've never done it before, now is a good time.

Along with pickup height, you may also be boosting the bass too much in your signal chain. That will make note pop out on the E string, which is naturally bassier. I used to have a similar problem with the B string on a Modulus and solved it with compression.

Both options are quite possible actually: Too bassy frequency response from the bass, or pickup placement. Compression may be a good way to go, but personally, I would try to see if its fixable from the bass, so that you don't "depend" on external gear to make the instrument sound right.
Congratulations on the great gear BTW! I am also a Jazz Bass freak!

Greetings

Doug.

To be honest with you..
I bought this jazz a couple of months ago
and never had it professionally setup
and been trying to do it myself...

It is set very low action and got many buzzing spots
Maybe I should book it in to professionals then..
I have been trying to save money as possible

heheh yeah, I know the feeling... you can either practice and learn how to do it yourself, or jsut take it to a pro luthier and get it done quickly, and properly the first time... At the end it ain't rocket science like you sya in America . It depends mostly on your budget vs time situation .

Got all the wrenches, but no feeler gauges yet

I hope proper setup fix up the problem
