Overdrive to replace Bad Monkey?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I'm looking for an overdrive as an upgrade for my Bad Monkey. My set-up is currently Fender Jazz or Jaguar > POG > English Muff'n > Bad Monkey > Bassballs > Small Stone > Opto-Stomp > Submarine > Ashdown EB12 EVO II 180.

I want to be able to go from clean to mild overdrive to an overdriven solo/lead tone. I'm currently using the Muff'n for the mild and the Monkey for the lead, although I could swap the roles when I replace the monkey.

I'm looking to spend no more than £150/$240 and am considering the Way Huge Pork Loin, but just wondered if anyone had any opinions or suggestions?

Thanks!

The Xotic Bass BB Preamp. I have a modded Bad Monkey and it's what I've been looking at as an upgrade. It shares a similar tubescreamer based design with bass/treble controls, so will sound similar (but hopefully 'better'). It's also smaller, true bypass, and I think the gain control goes from clean to full on distortion, having more range than the BM. I've also heard some great things about the Pork Loin, but haven't heard any bass clips yet! For mild overdrive, the Barber LTD SR takes some beating too, plus I really like the sound of the Blackstone Appliances Mosfet Overdrive, which has a video review over at Bassfuzz.com.

Thanks. Would there be any problem with having two preamps on a board, the Xotic and the submarine? I'm relatively new to effects!

There are some Pork Loin bass clips here: Way Huge Pork Loin (Review and Clips)

a fulltone bassdrive could do both a mild and a lead tone. i had one for a while and liked it alot, i only need a light OD sound, so it was a bit overkill for me.

No problem with having multiple gain stages, (I've got 6), just set the gain on each one to unity, and all is well. I have no suggestion for an overdrive other than my favorite, the EBS Valve Drive, which is probably over budget.

No, especially when the BB 'preamp' is basically just a modified tubescreamer. It's as much as a preamp as your Bad Monkey is!

I have the Pork Loin and a Fulltone Bassdrive (non-mosfet) and like both. If I had to chose I would go Pork Loin because of the clean signal blend pot.

Ah, ok thanks.

I think I'm gravitating towards the Pork Loin at the moment. Someone on the 'post your pedalboard' thread mentioned they preferred it due to the inclusion of a clean preamp.

Plus I think it's the cheapest option I have so far!

I love my Ashdown James Lomenzo Hyperdrive pedal, but im not really sure how it would stand up against the Pork Loin

+1 on the Hyperdrive. Not only does it sound fantastic, it's great value. There's loads of usable sounds as well as a dry mix knob which retains low end extremely well.

Oh and it seems your just down the M1 from me (I'm in sunny Wakefield )
