I play in a trio, and often use a light fuzz to thicken my tone. If I needed to cut through a large group of musicians, I would probably use light overdrive to serve that purpose.

My taste in fuzz is pretty mild and dark, close to OD. Some fuzzes can sort of cop an OD and vice verse as it's sort of a matter of degrees of clipping. I may very well not keep the fuzz but I really doubt I'll ever ditch my OD. |
