I'm looking for that Queens of the Stone Age, Kings of Leon, Eagles of Death Metal bass tone.
I got the passive fender, roundwound strings, downstroke pick action, but can't drop $1500+ for a used ampeg svt 8x10 + ampeg svt classic to get that tone.
I'm currently working with a 300 watt trace elliot cab and a 4x10 peavey cab. I play 1st thru a russian big muff guitar pedal that you can get at GC these days, then into a Sans amp bass driver so I can still get low end and attempt to control the dynamics..
The problem still is 1. muddiness 2. boomy sound 3. lack of punch 4. feedback
I have to dial out the low end on the trace otherwise its super boomy, but then my tone is too middy and we are only a three piece so I still need the lows. For recording, it's not so much of a problem because I record clean once, then layer a distorted track over it.
I'm not against dropping $900-1k on a new rig but I'm having a lot of issues finding something within that price range. Any help would be appreciated. |

I may not be using it correctly because I can get some nice sound by dialing up the drive on my practice amp by completely by-passing the pre-amp, but on my trace I use it as a stomp-box and it's super-super loud and then I have dial down the level a bit which affects the grit of the overdrive.
This isn't the exact head I have but close .. Trace Elliot AH 300-7 Head .. http://www.trace-elliot.co.uk/pop_pr...obs=Y&key=2174 |

There are some pedal builders on these forums that would probably build you a blender for around $60. I've never used a blender so I couldn't say one way or the other. Good luck!

The nice thing about the Xotic blender (compared to other less expensive ones) is that it has a few features that will allow you to dial in the perfect balance of tone and response between the dry channel and the effect channel. Phase reverse, EQ, level, blend from 0% to 100%, and the ability to footswitch between dry, blended, and 100% wet channels at the output.
Of course you can get the same results with double-tracking in the studio, but the blender is nice for live or rehearsing. |
