Overdriven Tube Sound on a Budget?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for that Queens of the Stone Age, Kings of Leon, Eagles of Death Metal bass tone.

I got the passive fender, roundwound strings, downstroke pick action, but can't drop $1500+ for a used ampeg svt 8x10 + ampeg svt classic to get that tone.

I'm currently working with a 300 watt trace elliot cab and a 4x10 peavey cab. I play 1st thru a russian big muff guitar pedal that you can get at GC these days, then into a Sans amp bass driver so I can still get low end and attempt to control the dynamics..

The problem still is 1. muddiness 2. boomy sound 3. lack of punch 4. feedback

I have to dial out the low end on the trace otherwise its super boomy, but then my tone is too middy and we are only a three piece so I still need the lows. For recording, it's not so much of a problem because I record clean once, then layer a distorted track over it.

I'm not against dropping $900-1k on a new rig but I'm having a lot of issues finding something within that price range. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm surprised that you can't get that tone with the SansAmp. That's what I use and get lots of overdrive if needed.

If layering tracks works to get the sound you are going for, I would suggest you try out a blender pedal.

Do you use the Sansamp as a stompbox or thru the effects loop?

I may not be using it correctly because I can get some nice sound by dialing up the drive on my practice amp by completely by-passing the pre-amp, but on my trace I use it as a stomp-box and it's super-super loud and then I have dial down the level a bit which affects the grit of the overdrive.

This isn't the exact head I have but close .. Trace Elliot AH 300-7 Head ..http://www.trace-elliot.co.uk/pop_pr...obs=Y&key=2174

lots of people on here would suggest the Xotic X-blender. It's a little pricey though. There are some pedal builders on these forums that would probably build you a blender for around $60. I've never used a blender so I couldn't say one way or the other. Good luck!

+3! And this is coming from someone who owns a '76 SVT and matching 810. If you are on a budget, this will get you pretty darn close considering the cost.

The VT is nice, but if I was looking for stoner-doom but with more punch and articulation, I would blend my clean signal with an old germanium fuzz like the Frantone Bassweet.

The nice thing about the Xotic blender (compared to other less expensive ones) is that it has a few features that will allow you to dial in the perfect balance of tone and response between the dry channel and the effect channel. Phase reverse, EQ, level, blend from 0% to 100%, and the ability to footswitch between dry, blended, and 100% wet channels at the output.

Of course you can get the same results with double-tracking in the studio, but the blender is nice for live or rehearsing.

I highly recommend a flat eq if you use any sansamp as stomp box. They give massive lows into anything you throw'em at.
