Overdriving compressor input

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a Retro-Sonic compressor on my guitar pedal board that I love so much with my Gretsch hollow body that I pretty much run it all the time. I pulled it from the board the other day to try it with my Stingray 5, and the results were not good. If I used any eq boost (which I typically do) and turned the volume on the bass up past 50%, the input to the compressor was overdriven (and not in a pleasant way, at least to my ears).

So, my question is, if I'd like to add a compressor for a bit of sustain to my signal path, are there any out there that can handle the output of a SR5 with the lows and mids slightly boosted without breaking up? Or will I be stuck forever running my bass below half volume?

Oh, and I'm looking for a stomp box and preferably something under $250... I don't want to get started down the whole rack-mount path (I'm sure there are plenty of $1k+ rack-mount units that could handle my bass without any problems whatsoever).

And yes, I've read Bongomania's excellent FAQ! I just don't have time to read all of his reviews!

Yep. What you want to look for especially is a comp that either has an input level control, or runs at higher than 9VDC. Both of those contribute to being able to handle high instrument levels.

Yeah, I'm thinking the Maxon or the Aguilar TLC... or possibly the Markbass, especially considering how much I love my Markbass amp. The exotic power requirements there might steer me away.
