Oxide problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought an Iron Ether Oxide a few weeks ago, and it has worked great until tonight. Sounded great, bypass was clean. But when I turned my rig on tonight and started playing "clean" there was an almost Muff-like distortion in my signal. After much plugging and unplugging all over my rig, I isolated it to the Oxide, which was supposedly bypassed but still distorting my signal. Weird. Never had a pedal fail this way before. Any ideas what might be wrong? I have emailed IE to see about fixing it. We'll see what comes of it, I guess.

Hi NortyFiner, I appear to be having some issues with my email program because I don't see your email. I will PM with alternative contact info so we can straighten this out.

Hi Taylor! Thanks for the quick response. Great pedal, seriously. It kicked my Bass Big Muff clean off my board; I like the Brassmaster side with the Clean cranked up, Voice down and Strangle on. I'm sure (I hope) it's an easy fix.

Here's more info to help troubleshoot:

The distortion I was getting from the bypassed Oxide was NOT its normal voice. It was something else entirely.

The distortion went away (or was at least suppressed) when I turned on the pedals in the chain ahead of the Oxide. My signal chain looked like this: Bass > Tuner > Filter > Comp > Oxide > Phaser > Delay > Amp. All my other pedals are working normally.

When I played my bass right through the bypassed Oxide by itself (bass > Oxide > amp) the distortion was still there, and didn't seem to be affected by my instrument's output. I was playing a passive P bass, so I doubt a too-hot input to the Oxide was the problem.

I tried different power supply points from my Voodoo brick. That made no difference in the distortion.

I tried fiddling with the Oxide's knobs and switches while bypassed. That seemed to make some difference in the distortion.

When I turned the Oxide on, it got plenty loud, but the effect didn't sound quite like its normal self.

Hope that helps.

Just to make things clear to everyone: Taylor and I have been trading PM's and emails working on this problem. It seems to be a power supply issue inside the pedal, so I will be sending my Oxide back to him for repair. He has been nothing but friendly and helpful through this whole process. Don't judge his body of work by my one odd problem; the Oxide is still a great pedal, and I highly recommend Taylor's work.
