P-nut's fuzz tone on the song "Solar Flare"

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I just recently got into 311 (thanks to this forum) and I was listening to the song "Solar Flare", which is certainly not my favorite song of theirs but the fuzz at the beginning is awesome! I have a bbm but that's obviously a different kind of fuzz cause I can't get anywhere near this sound. Does anyone know what pedal he's using or how he gets that sound? I did a search but couldn't find squat on this song at all.

I'm pretty sure his board is posted in the Pedalboard of the Stars thread, and I think he's using a Russian Muff live.

But if you could post up a link to the song in question, that'd be really helpful towards figuring this out.

Here's a clip of the album version.

Hard for me to say what fuzz that is. Doesn't sound like a Muff to me but I suppose it could be.

After taking another look at his board, I think its Russian Muff>MXR Octaver.

I hate every song ever recorded by 311, except that one. It is somewhat tolerable

You think it's the octaver that makes it sound that thick? Or is the Russian Muff just that much different from the BBM?

For what its worth I had a Russian Muff for a real long time (seven or eight years), and I ran it in conjunction with my Whammy a fair amount. To my ears, its Muff+Octaver.

While the Russian Muff does sound different from the BBM, you wouldn't be able to get that sound out of it on its own.

And FWIW, I think that the resurgence of the Russian Big Muff-after years and years of people looking down on it as inferior to the venerable Green-in the face of the Bass Big Muff is quite funny, since the BBM is based on the Green, and addressed a lot of bassists "concerns" to the Russian circuit.

the Sovtek Muff is a LOT different than a normal Muff. That song is not just a Russian Muff though. It sounds to me like it has way more bottom end than what a Russian Muff can produce (which is still somewhat significant). I agree with the octave explanation, to my ears and based on what he has on his board, its probably a combination of the two.
