I'm looking for a 1U high, line-level, stereo compressor. I'm leaning towards a DBX166A. It will be used in both of the following ways:
1) Noise rig: Sampler, and pedals in feedback loops into a DJ mixer-->compressor-->QSC Power Amp-->Stereo Ampeg 4x10s. I would love some "studio-style" compression on this, just to even out the volume between drum loops and pedal-noise and also to make the drum loops punch a bit more. Using bass cabs already provides a bit of speaker compression, but I would like it to be a bit more controllable.
2) Bass rig: bass-->Tronographic Rusty Box preamp (run with a good amount of distortion)-->comp-->QSC Power Amp-->Ampeg 4x10s stacked on top of each other. This is a mono setup. I don't know that I really need a compressor in this setup, as the Rusty Box compresses the signal nicely at the gain levels I run, but since I use the same amp rig for both things that I do, I might as well make it useful on both. Is that dumb? I could use a gate in this setup.
So is the 166A the thing? Budget is ~$150. |
