Paisley Tubby Effects Quasar (Ampeg Scrambler Clone)

Sign in to disble this ad
ok, so I got this from Dannybouy not too long ago, and thought i'd take some pics and do a clip so show you what its all about.

http://paisleypedals.webs.com/paisleyquasar.htm

Its an Ampeg Scrambler Clone and as such has two controls:

Blend and Texture - There is no Volume or Gain/Drive controls (as with the original)

Blend is just a clean blend - minimum is dry, maximum is wet.

Texture seems to work backwards to the Scrambler RI that i had. If you crank the texture you get the most low end. This is where it sounds most traditional and IMO, the most useful for a bass player. As you dial the Texture back, it starts to thin out the sound but adds an aggressive octavia-type sound.

Clip:
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7715939 (be wary, i do talk quite a bit) - VTbass is set to the 'flat' setting discussed elsewhere on this forum - Ie: Bass,Mid and Character just past noon, highs at about 10 and Drive is at minimum.

It bares some sonic similarities to both the B:Assmaster and the Prunes and Custard - mainly because its a Harmonic octave up sorta drive pedal. Its not a balls out fuzz, and its not a subtle overdrive, its somewhere in between.

I should note that Quasar sounds mental on guitar - absolutely mangles chords.

What I like:
>>Its simple, but there is a fair bit of tonal variety.
>>Its about half the size of the Scrambler (the Quasar is about the size of a Boss Pedal)
>>Its got an Status LED (which the Scrambler doesnt)
>>Seems solidly put together and I like the paisley pattern
>>Seems that there is no loss of lows with both controls at maximum.

What I dont like:
>>No master volume - this doesnt seem to be as much of a problem as it was with the Scrambler RI - but still, it would be nice to see it on there.
>>No gain control

I have no complaints about this pedal, but am not sure if i'll keep it yet. Its not really quite as unique as my Prunes and Custard, and isnt quite as versatile as my SuperCollider, and with more things coming in the post (Tonefactor Bass Fuzz Saw, Zoom Ultra Fuzz) Its becomming time to streamline - some of you might have noticed me selling alot of pedals lately.

Well that sort of solved my main gripes with the Scrambler. I loved the dirt it got, but couldn't make it work without some kind of blend, and I really hated not knowing when the damn thing was turned on (it got easily lost in a live mix for me). Ended up going in a different direction with my dirt.

Thanks for the review.
