I assume it's a overdriven tubeamp but I want to be able to recreate this sound for a few songs. Or can I do this with a parametric eq with the mids boosted?
I will be using the OD with an active custom 5 string, a Hevos 400D amp and a 2 x 10" and 1 x 15" speaker.

Oh man, what a great bit of footage. These two are my all-time favourite rhythm section.
I went to a Headhunters reunion gig in London a few years back, with Herbie in the band too. It was kicking the whole way and I had a backstage pass. So after the gig I went up to Paul Jackson and was unable to stop my self blurting out that i'm bass player too and you are my bass hero! What a twat!!
Anyway he was totally cool about it and said let's get some beers and chat - so we went to his dressing room and I asked him that very question...how do you get that amazing overdriven tone?
He said, look at my fingers. He has welts in his fingers you could drive a truck thru and callouses like rock. He said all I do is hit those stings as hard as I can.
So, given that he was using no effects that night either, I understood that his tone is in his fingers more than anything else, as it is for all of us to a great extent. But I reckon he drives his amps pretty hard too. Oh and I notice he prefers single coil jazz pups.
The strings and setup play a part in the sound too. I found that with roundwounds or light gauge labella flats, with low action, I can get a similar growl out of my p-bass, but I couldn't get the sound with other brands of flats, higher gauge strings, or high action.

What a great story Bassnut62! He is absolutely one of my heroes as well, his playing is incredible. I feel I've studied the live album Flood so much, and Paul's tone and playing is still jaw dropping - he connects to the notes with such precision, and now it makes he gets his tone from connecting so fiercely with the notes. Thanks so much for posting that bit of info!
ya, he rocks. makes a strong case for digging in instead of playing like a puss all light touch and everything there's a time playing light sounds good, but like larry graham says, if you want it to sound big, you have to hit the string hard.
Glad you like the story - what a guy and what a bass player. My absolute fave. As for Flood....does anything else in music touch this album? There are not many perfect single LPs. I don't know any other perfect double LPs and as for perfect double live LPs - I didn't think that was possible.
I also love the bass on If You've Got It, You'll Get It from the Survival Of The Fittest LP - that will either give you or save you from arthritis! Not sure which. Any bass playing joint doctors in the house?
Anyway in my book Paul Jackson should get more recognition for the bass god that he is.
