Peavey F-Ex Bass Effects Unit

So recently at a show I was talking to my guitarist friend and he showed me his "rack" (2 small boxes bungee corded to his cab with a mounted power amp inside). It consisted of an SR&D Instrument Equalizer (Mid 80's I believe) and a small "Tube Driver PreAmplifier" that had 2 tubes in it and 3 knobs (volume, push, grind). It was an amazing sounding set up. Neither of the two boxes he has are widely available so I decided to look around as to what there is as far as rack stuff (I'm interested in starting a rack, at least a processing one, then later getting a power amp). And I found a used Peavey F-ex for 140$ USD. And I saw a picture of it and it looked pretty complicated. I was wondering if anyone's had any experience with this effect (I have a vintage 31 band EQ anyways and I wanted something to maybe add a little something extra to the rack's sound).
thanks,
k
