pedal advice for 'Cheap Sunglasses" sound

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, I rarely use effects with the exception of a chorus ped for one song. Having said that, I don't know much about distorsion pedals. The ZZ Top song-Cheap Sunglasses bass line, has some distorsion in it.

Can someone recommend me a effect pedal to cop that sound?

I play Cheap Sunglasses in one of my bands (I am playing it at a gig tonight!) and I use the following...

Ampeg rig (B2RE with a 2x10)

Tech 21 SansAmp RBI (set with Drive at 7 or 8 for a bit of reverb, mids flat, treble at about 4 and bass at about 7)

Fender MIA Jazz V (or my Geddy 4 string as the B string isn't used at all for this tune)

I usually play with a bit more neck pickup and roll the bass on my Fender to about 8 and treble to about 2 or 3.

Great rig set-up Baird. Have fun at the gig tonite. I have a gig tonite also, though we are not playing Cheap Sunglasses, yet.

What I need is a PEDAL that will give me distorsion without sucking the lows out.

Anybody have advice based on personal experience?

Your best bet might be to search on "distortion" to read one of the thousands of threads on the subject. Also, note that he recommended a Sansamp, and even provided settings; and Sansamps also come in pedal form.

Well, I have a sansamp bass driver that I never use but for a DI, it overdrives but does not distort enough for me, if that makes sense. Thanks.
