I'm trying to cop the sound of Geezer Butler on NIB/Behind the Wall of Sleep. Any one have any insight as to what pedal would work?

A Tycobrahe wah pedal and an old knackered amp with blown speakers turned up to 11! There's plenty of Geezer threads around if you search for them too.

you want an auto wah, sometimes callen an envelope filter. its an automatic wah wah pedal , so you get a wah every time you pluck a note, instead of having to rock your foot on a real one. johnny a.

But that won't produce the right result... it doesn't open and close on every note in that song. A manual wah is the effective solution to do it correctly.

Also, autowah is NOT the same as an envelope filter. An autowah usually sounds like wah pedal, but has a cyclical sweep with a set rate (like a phaser or flanger). An envelope filter responds to attack, and many of them can often sound very different than a wah pedal.

Anyhow...

The general Geezer formula... it's largely dependent on your technique and using a P-bass. N.I.B. is unique because of the wah and extra drive coming from a beat-up rig. Feel free to search threads on Geezer Butler if you want to get the exact details. IIRC, a Tycobrahe wah is what he's currently using for his wah sound. I forget the rig details...

Yep - get a wah wah pedal, and think "heel-toe". Heel on one, toe on two, heel on 3 and toe on 4. You're just rocking your foot to the beat for the most part. There are a few subtle changes but that gets you the basic concept.
