Which pedal for a Burton-esque solo?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing with some more thrash/speed metal oriented bands lately and I have acquired the urge to have play some really shrieking solos. I have narrowed it down to three choices of Big Muff since the BBM is both expensive and does not have quite the edge that I am looking for.

I know the other Muffs are "low end suckers" especially the NYC version, but I am not worried about this. I am not looking for a round bassy sound. I have a Morley Power Wah as well to help get the right tone. Which Muff would work best?

1. NYC Big Muff Pi
2. Little Big Muff
3. Russian Big Muff

To be honest the modern muffs, I've owned them and I don't think they sound too hot with a wah. One muff that I did find worked very nicely with my wah pedal was the Wren and Cuff Tri Pie 70, which is based on a vintage big muff (specifically the triangle knob version, which I've found to be the most wailing muff on bass). Just to be clear, the new current run big muffs don't necessarily sound like the old vintage ones, specifically like the one Cliff Burton would have used.

Hmmm. Very interesting I would like to try the Tri Pie 70 out, but it's a bit over budget.

Would the Way Huge Swollen Pickle or the Tech 21 XXL Bass work?

I use a Muskett v2 and an Ebs wah one and can kop a decent reproduction of Cliff's tone for Pulling teeth. I suppose it depends how clinically exact you want to get.

Well, you could just go the exact replication route. Cliff used:

# Chrome Tel-Ray Morley Power Wah Fuzz

# Electro-Harmonix Big Muff

# Ibanez Tubescreamer-TS808

# Boss CS-2 Compressor

# Boss CS-1 Compressor (according to "To Live Is to Die" Cliff Burton Metallica Biography Book-Front page color pics)

I'm not really trying to go exact, just a close sound. If I was going exact I would have a much larger budget.

Sweet sound indeed. If I had the cash I would definitely pick up a few Wren and Cuff pedals.

learned that for a talent show in 10th grade. Had an issue of "bass player" with the tablature. Practiced it so many times I still remembered how to do it 20 yrs later!
Fun song to learn when you're a young metal-head bass player...

Indeed it is. I learned it my 8th grade year. I had the Cliff 'Em All VHS (originally my dad's) and the first album. I just sat down, listened, and just played 'til I got it right. I'm just getting into my senior year of highschool though. I still use bit's from it during gigs, worked in with my own stuff.

Next you need to deconstruct some Jaco. Wish I would've done that when I was younger!

Here's some Jaco... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXOnhzoC-i8
What blows me away is how precise and in-tune each note is, and he's playing a fret-less.

Jaco is a classic. I love his work. I do know some, but I just don't sit around and play his solo albums as much as I should.

it can be tough to get around the "un-coolness" of alot of his stuff, the arrangements, horns etc. (the weather report), but one can't deny the amount of talent the man had. I think the word "talent" is very over-used but man, those chops come from a whole other universe... mindblowing.

It's not that. I love jazz. I meant I literally don't have as much time to set around and listen as much as I'd like.

+2 on the Tech 21 XXL Bass version. I picked one up a while ago and dig it for that style of distortion. Pretty dam cheap too.

That Tech 21 piece does look like it might make for a rather mean distortion box. Still haven't played around with one but I plan to soon.
