Pedal Can't Live With Out

Sign in to disble this ad
I know the title sounds lame, we are bass players, right? But, I bought a Keeley Compressor Stomp Box (2 Knob) pedal a couple years back when I got my Alembic F-1X because my speaker cones were jumping out about and 1" or more,

I've used this pedal with my Alembic F-1X, Eden Navigator and now with my Aguilar DB750. I use it mostly as a limiter, not too much compression. But, this pedal ads some musical presence that when I turn it off, the three amps/preamps I mentioned sound blah or missing some life to the sound. Basically, it tightens up my sound and makes it have good punch.

The only down sound is, when on, you loss a little bass. Not much. So I just turn the bass knob on my amp to let say on my Aguilar, from 12 o'clock to 12:30 o'clock. Or my Alembic from 4 o'clock to 5. It's not much. One person wrote a review and said it was drastic. But, he was talking about the 4 know Keeley and it was hard for me to believe since it's the same pedal. The 2 knob has 2 trim pots inside. One trim pot is attack for basses with very high out put and the other trim is for input sensitivity.

So, if you're looking for a good stomp box compressor, check out Keeley. I don't know these people. Never talked to them on the phone, etc..... So this is not an ad.

I tried the T-Rex and the tube was microphonicing so bad, I couldn't us it Was very difficult to change the tube, and also too many knobs for me.

The usual answers are tuners comps and preamps.

I remember bongo's review of the T-Rex in which he was disappointed with it. Too noisy.

Yeah, Bongo's review ALMOST stopped me from trying one out, but I did anyway, and I'm sure glad I did. Great tone machine, and pretty versatile comp, if I do say so. And, no noise, (unless the make-up gain is set too high). My Squeezer is my "can't live without pedal", along with the Barber Linden, and a tuner. Everything else is just "effects'.

I've seen the light.. it's the FX25..Wait? What?... some old filter from the 80's... I had to get the oldest crustiest one I could find because otherwise they lack the necessary mojo...

I learn so much here it's insane.

+1 for the Keeley Comp...

I used to have the 2-knob version for 5 years and it's been my pedal that I can't live without. It had only one trimpot control (attack) inside. I think they added the input gain trimpot later. It worked like a dream with basses with moderate output. However, my recent lineup consists of 2 G&L's and a Rickenbacker, which have more-than-moderate output levels and caused the 2-knob Keeley to overcompress. I could not resolve this issue by increasing the attack time from the trimpot inside. I was considering a switch to T-Rex Squeezer (which had a Threshold control), then I got a chance to try out the 4-knob Keeley. I found that the input trim control was the solution to my problem. Now my ex 2-knob Keeley is replaced with the 4-knob one and I'm happy as before...

Soundwise I like the uncolored sound of Keeleys. There is some slight loss of bass, but it's really too slight for me to bother. I use it with four and five stringers and the results never bothered me. I like the way it makes the B string sound punchy without getting too boomy. Maybe that's because the "slight bass loss", right?
