Pedal that clarifies bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for a pedal that will make each sound more defined. Some sort of equalizer maybe?

I think thats more technique than anything.

An EQ will boost certain frequencies.

I agree that first you should adjust your technique, and second you should try different strings. After you've got those dialed in, then try a Diamond BCP-1 compressor.

Without knowing your skill level and the rig you use, it's impossible to tell whether you need a pedal to clarify your sound.

When I want a well defined sound, I cut the neck PU a bit on whatever bass I am using, I cut the frequencies around 800-1000hz; and I play near the bridge. I get a tight sound.

You will get a huge range of answers, and none of them may be right for you.

Right now I could make some guesses...
- You're using an underpowered amp playing with loud guitarist(s) with big amps and a loud drummer? No need for pedal, need for bigger/better amp
- You're playing a P-bass with flats, but trying to sound like flea? Get a stingray, not a pedal
- You want a tone-shaper - might need a pedal, I'd suggest trying out EQ's, compressors, Sansamps, and seeing what you like.

Tell us what you're working with (what bass, what amp), what you're working to/against (what other instrumentalists are you playing with, what kind of instruments and amps to they have) and what you're working on (what style of music). Clips (or references to particular sounds in particular songs) of what you're aiming for might be helpful too. Then we may have more helpful suggestions.

Steve

i use a BBE sonic stomp. It helped me a lot keeping my bass tone clear when playing live with a band.

As others have said, without knowing what amp, strings and bass you are using it is hard to make an accurate recommendation. My first thought would be a good quality compressor like the Aphex Punch Factory or maybe the Aphex Bass Exciter.

Technique, my friend. I recommend doing a lot of practice with right and left hand muting, each one independently should be able to keep the strings muted most of the time. Work on playing notes staccato, muting the strings with your plucking hand. Play them as short as you can, play sixteenths at 80 bpm and increase tempo as your get better. Play scales, excersizes, or whatever gets your plucking hand comfortable muting while crossing strings.

... Of course, equipment can also be a factor, but I'll bet the heart of the problem lies in your technique.

Make better use of the EQ on whatever bass/amp you're currently using?

No profile info filled out for original poster, so no one has any clue what you're using currently.

Too many variables - first you need to figure out why your notes ARENT well defined. It could be any number of things from your instrument to your amp/cab.
