Which pedal compressor is closest to the TC 450 Classic amp on-board compressor?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Genz Benz Streamliner coming so my TC Classic 450 amp is being relegated to backup duty. However, I REALLY like the one knob on-board compressor that the 450 has.

So now I will need to buy a compressor pedal.

I am very versed in Bongomania's compressor reviews. In fact, Cyrus has been VERY helpful in helping me choose gear components. Perhaps he will chip in but he is known to not be very fond of the TC folks

I have also realized that due to my ADHD brain and personality, I do not like [ read hate ! ] having too many knobs to tweak. I am in heaven having just the one knob on the amp to turn up or down. And I honestly like how it effects my sound.

I am leaning toward the FEA OPTI-FET.

So you say why not try the T.C.Electronic Nova Dynamics? Well, I did. And there are to many knobs. To hard to find that same simple one knob on board compressor that works so well for me. If someone has had luck getting that same sound, please let me know.

So I am hoping that some of you who have or have played the 450 can make suggestions for a simple and HIGH quality compressor pedal. It must be big on the clarity side and I am not needing ANY squishing.

Thanks !!

Well, there aren't many three-band, one knob compressors out there (to put it mildly). The Nova Dynamics is the first thing that springs to mind in pedal format (I have one), and you already nixed that one. Most pedal comps are single-band, which is simply going to compress differently than multiband compression. The EBS Multicomp has a dual band mode, and is about as simple to use as compressors come, so maybe give that one a look? Any others I can think of will have as many or more knobs as the Nova Dynamics.

You might like the FEA SMX better than the Opti-FET; it is dual-band, and has only six knobs. I don't think the EBS is hi-fi enough for you.

Well, the 450 comp itself is actually fully featured within the software, but the user has no adjustment over the parameters (only one control--less or more of it). Having said that, it's quite a nice compressor that evens things out with aplomb (and it matches gain as you adjust it). Probably my favorite feature on the RH450 (which has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to features), and I'm not afraid of lots of knobs (/behndy giggity).

Side-note: I'm rapidly becoming aware of my addiction to parentheses.

I will check out the SMX and I may have to give the TC Nova Dynamics another look.

Went ahead and bought a TC nova dynamics pedal off of ebay best offer brand new in box $ 115.00 shipped.

I really like this pedal. Smooth and full. Quite a few options.

I had emailed TC and they said it has the same algorithm as the compressor on the TC 450 head.

And NO glitch !!! So I am set for now.

Good choice. Just got one a couple weeks ago. It's pretty much idiot-proof (they should put my picture on the carton)...knobs for compression, gain, and EQ / voicing.
