But the exact same thing would be achieved by just putting the volume pedal after the GR. With one less cable.
The effects loop is for using a more dynamic version of your signal - clean instrument - to trigger the envelope detector, while filtering a more harmonic-rich version of your signal with more compressed dynamics. So usually a distortion goes in the loop, which creates more harmonics for the filter to carve up, but the distorted signal has lower dynamic range, so the loop is used to derive the envelope from the clean signal.
