i wouldn't do a flanger for those styles. Synth *might* be cool for hip hop, but that depends on what style of hip hop.

hmm ok, for the reggae and pop its more of a subtle thing, for the hip hop, i would want somehting extremely versatile.

Think about it- what is used for bass in hip hop? It's usually either a synthesizer (sometimes in the form of a detuned drum machine) or a sample from a classic funk record, often featuring a P bass or J bass with no effects, or maybe with an envelope filter sometimes.

So you want a synth (search on "synth", we've got several excellent threads comparing the available models) or you want to learn basic, classic funk bass technique.

Well I'd recommend some sort of synth dealio, along with an envelope filter and...a fuzz pedal. An octaver is probably on the list too.

i could suggest probobly about 10-15 pedals that i'd consider all perfect for your needs..maybe i really am a pedal junkie..

but anyway, a lot of hip hop is a synthesizer. reggae i'd just use some kind of bass/volume booster and pluck the strings lightly, or maybe some very low gain drive pedals.

some pedals that are overall usefull for your needs would be -
bass fuzz (electronix messdrive can definately do hip hop, and reggae)
some form of synth (my favorite is korg G5, but deep impact and bass micro synthesizer are excellent as well)
suboctave (boss OC-2 is pretty much the standard/best one around.)

with these three, combining them, and using them alone, you can get a huge variety of sounds suitable for your needs..next i would reccomend and envelope filter..theres tons of great ones out there, lime green dod fx25 and the EHX Qtron tend to be peoples favorites.

since you mentioned flanger, you might like some phase shifter. i highly highly reccomend the red witch moon phaser.

good luck and let us know what you end up with..

you might want to think about finding on of the old DOD envelope filters (250, 440) and setting it to make that pure bass frequency sound.

+1 Bongo. If you do go for a pedal, I strongly suggest an older generation DOD FX25 envelope filter. Which you should search.

Anyway, it's a great envelope filter that is perfect for dub and reggae when you pull down the sensitivity.

I'd say a fuzz, a flanger, an octave, an EQ (dialed for a massive bass boost) and an envelope filter. My suggestions for each would be an MXR Blowtorch, an MXR flanger, Electro-Harmonix Octave Multiplexer, a Boss bass EQ and a Electro-Harmonix BassBalls. You could use them separately or combine them all to get into some synthy territory.

EHX Bass Micro Synth - octaver, filter and synth in one pedal, pretty versatile, and they've just announced the smaller 9v XO version too.
