Question Pedal to make my polite PUPS nasty?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am using a Cort A4 with Bart MK-1's. Great bass, but the PUPS are very polite sounding, which has been fine in my jazz fusion groups, but now I am in a very loud Funk Rock band too, and want to boost the tone and be a bit more nasty.

I don't really want to swap the MK-1's for Mk4 CMC's, like most people do. I would rather just buy a pedal that provides the necesary grunt.

Any suggestions on a good pedal to get aggressive punch out of these polite PUPS?

Some light distortion would give you some growl. The VT bass pedal has been doing that for me (though none of my basses are particularly polite) I think it'll get you there.

OR, I once had a HBE compressor retro that added some nice crunch. I think those are two things you could really use to spice stuff up for a funk outfit.

I would suggest an Ashdown James LoMenzo Hyperdrive, I know he's more know for playing metal, but he plays alot of blues & a good OD is a good OD regardless of genre IMO, a compressor could be useful, or maybe a BBE Sonic Stomp would be useful

Try the VT-Bass, or a Voodoo Bass. Both should get you some more growl out of your bass.

Also, that vid is great! The sound quality suffered from the camera that was recording it, but it can't cover up that you've got some talent!

I have not used the Diesel Dog, but I did have a 2001RB at one point which the Diesel Dog is based on (second channel).

It's got a great sound, but not a whole lot of presence. Seems to be very treble-heavy and I had to boost the bass and cut the treble to make it useable. I started looking for good replacements for the second channel almost immediately and then finally traded the amp for an Ampeg. That being said, I know that it works for some people on this forum. I just like to be that one voice of dissent when I can be. It's not a good thing to jump into an investment when all you hear is praise.

Interesting ..and much appreciate the follow up post.
Im going to have to do some more reading ......Ive never heard a 2001rb sound brittle ..or overly top heavy ..and had hopes the Diesal Dawg pedal was going to be my answer to that tone without spending $1400 for the head .

Im assuming you put plenty of time into the amp before trading it away so Ill take your word on the review. Now I have to find more research material ...Im so confused.

That was when I was a kid, at an outdoor concert, using a Cort Curbow and a 60W Peavey combo ha ha. Yeah filmed on a crappy digi stills cam by the drummers brother.

Looks like the concensus is the VT, they probs cost over $400 here in Oz.

Yep, had at least 3-4 months with it, maybe more. TBH if you're looking for the 2001RB sound, the 700RB-II and 1001RB-II heads sound just like channel 1 without the extremely heavy weight and super big wattage.

!?!?!?!? $400?
You'd best be able to get one from the classifieds if someone were willing to ship overseas. They average around the $115-$140 range.

Also, if that's when you were younger then show us some later stuff!

An inexpensive pedal that might do the job is the Hartke Bass Attack. They sell for $99 new here, but can frequently be picked up in the $60-$70 on ebay. Who knows what they'll go for down under?

well, maybe you can find a nice inexpensive passive bass instead... i see in your profile you have a Pbass with EMGs - why don't you buy passive pickups for it, you will have plenty of nasty this way! you might even wanna try flatwound strings

but true, overdrive is nice in this regard, if you want the nasty of ouf a pedal... but a good overdrive pedal can be more expensive than good passive PUPs or even more expensive than an inexpensive bass!

I do too much slapping and tapping for flats. I really wanted to get a pedal instead of new PUPS, so that I have versatility.

Nobody recommended the Xotic RC or BB? I haven't personally used either but sounds more or less exactly like what the OP is looking for. The VT's SVT emulation doesn't really sound like the recipe for a more aggressive slap tone but if the 3 band EQ is versatile enough, I don't see why the VT couldn't work. I don't slap much in my group but it sounds totally fine on my active DynaBass through the RBI. Passive double-P with flats... not so much... sounds great finger style though.

I would get booster over OD/emulation pedal. Xotic Bass RC Booster, Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso, Fulltone Fat-Boost, etc.
