| | | | POLL: favorite overdrive pedal I'm getting tired of my Boss ODB-3 and am looking to upgrade to something a bit more natural sounding. I also use Sansamp VT Bass pedal, but I like to keep that set mild and just leave it on. So I want something a bit heavier I can kick in when need be. I've been searching through the archives and I've found a number of pedals keep getting mentioned. I also found this website with pedal reviews, so I came up with this list of pedals which seem to be regarded highly. Which of these do you like best? |

| | | | I'd love to post, but I've got nothing for this party. I only use two of the pedals on your poll: a Fulltone Bassdrive and the Swollen Pickle MKII. I also use something not on your poll, a Bad Monkey (Digitech, a TS copy/mod w/ a bass tone control, IIRC). I use the Bassdrive like you use the VT, although not always on, and the SP for very heavy fuzz, although still finalizing and approach so it's not currently on my board in favor of the Bad Monkey. I'd love to demo a lot of the pedals in your poll, especially: Blueberry, Supercollider, B:ASSMASTER, and the small sound/big sound pedal.
I did not dig the Ibanez Bass Tubescreamer much, admittedly auditioned at a disadvantage with a store bass and slightly messed up amp at Guitar Center, but still not inspiring- it was sort of blah, didn't get mellow enough on the quiet/OD end or extreme enough on the distortion side. The Bad Monkey may be better, at least just as good, and can be picked up used for $40 or less all the time.

If you are looking for a fatter, tube type OD IMO the Bad Monkey is a great pedal, especially considering how inexpensive it is!

so..
for Overdrives my favorites are :
-the Oxfuzz Bass which is technically a fuzz but can be tamed into a kickass OD.
-SFT..
-Fender Sublime ... same as the Oxfuzz.
(and Im really intriqued by the Darkglass and wanna try the TS9B too)
-Fulltone Bassdrive Mosfet
as for fuzzes..
-Sanford and Sonny
-Fender Sublime .. probably my most used fuzz.. very organic and usable in sooooo many settings
-Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian w/ blend
that said... everything on the list is pretty dang good, and theres plenty of other folks faves you forgot, it kinda comes down to finding the sound you hear in yer head. The ones above fit 'my sound' the best....
happy hunting.

| | | | guilty yeah, I did lump fuzz and OD together now that I think about it. I guess I'm going for more of an OD thing though.
I actually see a Bad Monkey on Craigslist in my area for $43... maybe I'll snatch it up! I'll look into those other recs as well. |

PS...overdrive or fuzz? If you want "natural" overdrive and in that case I'd vote a EHX English Muff'n.

JHS Custom Pre-Amp-Overdrive.
Based on a early 70's SVT.
I had a VT-pedal, but prefer this. ( It has become a big part of my tone.) |

That being said, I would like to also suggest the Greedtone Classic OD, the Greedtone itself and the Devi Ever DB and EB. Oh, I forgot about the Source Audio BD Pro. Ahh forget it. Get a bunch of em and try them out. Someone on here will buy the ones you don't keep.
