Power supply current question

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm a bit confused by voltage/current ratings.

If I power an effect with a power supply that has the correct voltage (18 volts) but a higher current (1000ma instead of 500ma), will it hurt the effect, or does the circuit just use as much current as it needs?

Thanks!

Yes, the pedal will use what it wants, no problem.

While on the topic...

What if i'm drawing all my current of the same power supply, and total amount of mA that my pedals use is greater that is written in the power supply? Is this dangerous for me or my pedals?

That is bad and could damage your pedals or your power supply. Get a bigger adapter. It may not hurt it right away (if all your pedals aren't on at once, for example), but sooner or later it's going to catch up to you. Save yourself some cash now.

Find one that can provide more current than that sum of mA or get a second adapter.

General rules:
  • Always match the voltage. If it needs 9VDC, give it 9VDC.
  • Always match the barrel size (2.1mm is most common).
  • Always match the polarity (center-negative is the most common).
  • You can never have too much current (), and it's wise to have at least a little to spare.
  • Be mindful of whether the pedal has a "positive ground" (most pedals are not, thankfully).
