In praise of the humble ODB-3

Sign in to disble this ad
I've always liked the ODB-3 for what it is: an industrial sounding distortion. I treated it as such, and used it veeeery little. One day, I was noodling around in my bedroom with it, but at one point I turned my amp off and left to roam TB. When I went back, I stepped on my Tech21 Leeds, which I use as a light overdrive. The sound that came from my amp wasn´t 'light' at all. It was the most beautiful, tube-screaming-for-mercy sound I've ever heard. It was then when I saw that my ODB-3 was still engaged.

So, for any of you that use this pedal as a paper weight, give it a try in front of your favourite overdrive or fuzz. You might be surprised...

Agreed.

For what it's designed to do and sound like, it does very well. Hell I've had one back on my board at least for 9 months now.

Interesting. I wonder if anyone will chime in with insight about the ODB-3 in front of a SansAmp PBDDI or other SansAmp unit. I did try tge Bad Monkey in front of the PBDDI and that didn't go too well, so I fired the Monkey.

Although mine has been Indymodded, it kills in front of my Sansamp RPM.

I haven't even thought about mine, other then to sell, in a while... Might have to hook it back up! I hadn't even thought about seeing how it plays with some of my newer pedals. Thanks for the reminder.

Although I always bitched about mine, I did go back and listen to a cool song it was recorded with on with my GK 800RB:

I've tried my Behringer BOD (obd-3 copy) afeter my vt bass and it sounded like crap, quind of squaky... but I'm dumb for talking velcro set ups as granted in my pedal board and not trying the other way around!

I'll try and post impressions as soon as I can!

I don't know how close it is to the real thing, but the ODB-3 setting on the Zoom b9.1ut is pretty awesome. I use it quite a bit in the band.

I think running OD into distortion/fuzz works for lots of different pedals. Like the multiple gain stages on a Mesa Mk VI, only cheaper. I've had some great tones running a SansAmp BDDI into a Fulltone BassDriver, cranking the bass on the BDDI helped alleviate the Fulltone's tendency to slightly thin the bass.

dang it....now I'm going to have to pull mine out again!

I liked it for a while, but didn't like the mid scoop.

I love mine, although I Don't use to distort a lot. I use with a low gain setting in front of my Art Tube Pac, which I use as a DI. Lovely tube saturation.
