Talking In praise of Inexpensive effects

Y'know, I don't know about anyone else, but I kinda like my cheap pedals. My BDI21 which only costs me 30 dollars does a damn good job.

Was it my first choice? No. A BDDI was.

Does it work? Yes. It works wonderfully. And, at $30 bucks, I can't really complain.

So why'd I get it as opposed to a BDDI? Well, I can't afford a BDDI. Not now, anyways. School & commuting to school (50+ miles each way) eats up all my money and job time.

I want to hear everyone elses story of appreciation about their cheap pedals of ANY brand, make, ect, cause despite what it seems otherwise I know y'all are out there.

Hmm, I love most of my Boss pedals, not the cheapest, but I also dig my GLX pedals, Boss clones at half the price!

And my tuner is a cheapie knock off of a korg stomp, I had a Peterson, but it fell over and no longer works......

What do you define "cheap" as in terms of cost?

anyways...

I gotta say the $10 dano fab chorus I got does a pretty nice job!

EHX's cheaper stuff is great too!

In terms of cost yes. I guess "Inexpensive" would fit better.

I would say under $100. Also, should we count retail price or what we payed for it (new or used)?

For almost $80, my Small Stone Nano gets it done. Outside of Behringer and Danelectro it doesn't get any cheaper for the effects I've built. Woolly Mammoth clone for $40? Oh yeah.

I meant my cheapest was $170. My DC Brick was $99 though.

Yeah, they work perfect for me. I never really realized how much I had into my pedalboard until I posted that list. Damn, I need to find some cheaper pedals.

i think its important to truly use what is right for YOU. if its a behringer pedal, then use that. if you feel you need to get a boutique pedal for what you wanna do (and you can afford it), then use that. there are some gems on both ends.

Here's the way I see it: There is a much better percentage chance that an expensive pedal will sound good. There are some $300+ dogs out there but more often than not you get something good for your money.

With inexpensive pedals, you're less likely to get a good sounding pedal. BUT, there are a ton of inexpensive pedals out there, so there's bound to be a number of really good value ones. In fact, I bet I could build a really solid 8 pedal board for well under $500.

My first pedal I bought, an EHX bassballs, I got for $30. Opened my world into bass effects, and I have not looked back since.

Since you say sub $100, I HAVE to add that the Big muff, LBM, and Bass Big Muff ROCK. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this opinion.

My cheapest pedal was my DOD FX72 which I freaking love.

My Messdrive was under $100 but I'm looking to trade that for either a modded Sovtek Muff or Bass Muff, both under $100.

The best-sounding "super-cheap" pedal I've ever used was the Digitech Bad Monkey. That thing is a convincing Tube Screamer for practically no money, and works great on bass.

I don't understand why the Bassballs is so cheap. It sounds different with every pedal you feed into it - it's like magic. Love it.

+1

The only bass specific pedal on my board is the boss limiter enhancer...and it is the only pedal that I bought new. For the price I love it, but would like to try a more expensive and musical sounding compressor.

Everything else I either bought used or traded for and that is what I love about FX. Doing some homework and looking for cheap used stuff can really open up the sonic palette.
