In praise of the XXL B

I really think this pedal is overlooked. I was using it yesterday, after being away from bass for a while, and it was so amazing. Very doomy in front of a BBM set to dry.

Sorry, I have no soundclips at this time.

but I do have the time police.

I love my XXL - it's slowly-but-surely become my main distortion pedal (Basic Overdrive: Xotic BB Bass preamp, "Lead" Distortion: the "Overdrive" circuit on my SWR Mini Mo' preamp) due to the absolutely gnarly tones you can get using the "Warp" and "Tone" functions. I usually have mine set to an almost broken-up "Industrial" distortion, but it's certainly a pedal of many colors. Including lots of purple.

I've tried it out a few times at the music store in town, and every time I do, it gets harder not to buy it. I may have to sucumb to the urges eventually...

Just, like, do it. Dragging it out is no fun.

I think I'll definately be getting one soon. I need to sell a few things first. I need to figure out what's worth keeping around... I don't think it'd work out to take a 210 combo, a 215 cab and head, 110 combo, 3 basses, and a pedalboard with me to college.

i'll probably pick one of these up again sometime. for one thing, it's REALLY PURPLE.

more importantly, despite its rep for "heavy distortion only" it is still a very dynamic, responsive distortion. I just find that I can't turn the drive up too much because i don't need half the gain it has available

Take the 210 combo, and your favorite axe, and a few pedals. leave the rest at home.

truth. I kinda almost wish it had LESS gain on tap, but then again, I feel like it'd loose something.

Of course, it probably sounds WAAAY BETTER in a tube amp.

It's looking like it's gonna go this way. My mom is buyting a house only about 100 miles from where I plan on going to college anyways. She's agreed to store my stuff already.

well of course it sounds amazing through a tube amp, but still, you can hardly turn the drive up to 9 o'clock before you slam the pre with all kindsa gnarly gain, so it can be tricky

I love mine! If y'all want a clip in a band setting, check out Another Day on the myspace in my sig. I kick it on at about 2:47 and play out the rest of the song with it on. I suggest starting the song at 2:25 for context, though (or listen to the whole thing; it's one of my favorites on the CD )

I am really impressed by the tone Karnivool's bass player gets with an XXL on a few of the newest karnivool tracks.

Wow. this band is not my thing but that bass tone is exactly what i've been looking for in distortion/OD.

note: the XXL bass edition DOES cut some lows at most settings, it's a byproduct of the huge amount of gain. If you've got a graphic EQ or a "deep" control of some kind, it's fairly easy to compensate.

I forgot Karnivool had a new cd coming out, and I just found those same tracks the other day. Holy mother of god thats what I want my bass to sound like!

I saw them live 2 years ago, but he didn't have that growly of tone! 'Simple boy' and 'Goliath' are definitely my favorite songs so far, mainly because of the bass tone

I just tried to find it on iTunes and they don't have it.

In thread related news, I've decided once and for all that I'm buying this pedal as soon as I get my next check (Friday).
