Question Preamp\DI comparison: ART Tube MP vs. GAP Pre-73

Sign in to disble this ad
This afternoon I dusted off my $29 ART "Tube MP" preamp and decided to compare it to my $300 Golden Age Project "Pre-73". Obviously these are in completely different ballparks price-wise, and the Pre-73 should wipe the floor with the ART.

I don't have a mic handy, so I tested with a Les Paul and my own P bass clone.

I play a lick through the first preamp, then play it again through the second. In each clip, the preamps are in the same order. I won't say which is which yet.

By the way, if you listen closely to the bass track, you can hear one preamp is a tiny bit noisier than the other. But in raw tone, they are VERY similar to my ears.

I liked the first better for bass than the second, but the second better for guitar. The first had more clarity for the bass, but for that riff, I thought the second was more appropriate.

My guess is that the ART is number one.
