Preamp/rack slimming suggestions...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi...

My current rack rig, which doubles at PA for parties sometimes, is a bit cumbersome (power conditioner, behringer limiter, dbx EQ used as a crossover as well, rack mixer, yorkville 3400 poweramp) and I've been trying to figure out a way to slim it down.

My core tone is a SBDDI with blend at 50%, and an English Muffin before it. I've tried a few POD esque type things and at higher volume, the speakersims and tone don't cut it for me...theres just a presence and force present in the aforementioned units missing from the simulations.

I need an eq to tame the highs as I run to full range cabs, and the SBDDI at 50% blend is not in full speaker sim mode. I also use the EQ as a crossover to the subs/tops (allowing me to have some overlap of frequencies which can be useful sometimes) and pull out the ultralows (speaker protection again).

I'd like to have one rack unit that handles master gain to power amp with metering, limiting, eqing, cross-overing but none seem to exist - except perhaps a driverack but they are expensive and don't have proper knobs for quick eq changes.

Any ideas? Or am I just stuck with a 6 space rack?

I could go to a normal bass head I suppose...but I am a bit addicted to the power of the yorkville. I have a Peavey mark 6 head and it just doesn't have the headroom I like.

Been looking at the EBS micro bass pre amp - that could handle the eq/speaker sim role and perhaps negate the need for an eq on the rack....I could then find a crossover with a limiter.

None of the typical bass rack preamps seem to have limiting, and sometimes no more than one input (sometimes I need to run a sampler pedal through the rig....at PAless gigs).

Any suggestions welcome. The peavey Pro 2000 amp looks like it would actually solve a lot of these issues, but thats a lot of cash to solve a bit of heavy lifting.

Long term I'd like to build some BFM high effficiency cabs which would make a more pedestrian amp head more viable - but that could be quite a while away.

TIA
MM

The AMP SL-1 preamp I just sold (at a loss, thanks rotten economy!) had a crossover, a limiter, and a very useful EQ. See if you can find one.

Not sure if these would be in your ballpark pricewise but you could look into a mic preamp. A few TB'ers (not myself) have tried the PreSonus Eureka preamp with built-in compressor, para-EQ, 1-rack space, mic-pre & some other features....

There is also a few pre's by Joe Meek The OneQ and the SixQ...

Focusrite also has the MH440 Platinum Voicemaster Pro...

Running a BDDi or Muff'n would certainly dirty up the cleanliness. AFAIK these do not have a crossover.
