I voted SansAmp, but I can't say if its the best, I can say it's my favorite.

Dang, where are the Rusty Box peeps at? I am going to get a Darkglass B7K in the next week, so that is my vote even though I don't own it yet.

Tried several including Aguilar, Sansamp and Radial Bassbone. For my passive vintage J-basses (fretted & fretless) it sounds best and is dead easy to use.

I voted Sansamp as I've the PBDDI, and I like it. I actually find my Amplitube/ iPad even better regarding tone also when connected directly into the PA, but the BDDI is a "real" preamp with both XLR and 1/4" connections, including phantom power and ground lift.

Aguilar Tone Hammer or VT Bass.

I have owned the Bassbone and the eq can only be fully applied to one channel and a lack of any drive or grit was disappointing for me, however the DI was excellent.

Am I missing something?

Surely the question doesn't take into account the music styles, the amps used, the bass used etc.

It's like asking:

"Which bass to use?
Sadowsky Jazz
Fender P
Ken Smith 6
Warwick Thumb
Conklin GT7
Squire Jazz"

With no other info.

:/

I've got both the Sansamp Bass Driver and the Aguilar Tone Hammer.

I haven't used the Sansamp since I got the Tone Hammer. I love that thing!!!!

Alembic SF-2

I'm using an Alembic SF-2, which is a filter, not really a pre, but it sure is a lot of fun.

I vote sansamp as I've used one for over a decade and have had great luck with it. I've never used the others listed. I would like to try the tone hammer as I've heard great things about it as well.
