Thought this would be a good topic to tempt my GAS.
Do you have a favored pedal when you get to solo in a band situation. I realize that most of us don't solo often (except for that select few) but when we do get the chance is there a tone that you prefer that helps the creativity. I figure some like to add an eq change or compression if they plan to slap or tap but I'm more interested in fingerstyle playin' in this case. For myself I typically keep it flat with maybe a slight volume increase but I have favored a wah pedal (Wilson) or distortion (Astro Fuzz) to change it up, especially if I get several opportunities. |

Distortion (Tech 21 XXLB)
Reverb (Dr. Scientist Radical Red Reverberator)
Octave (Boss OC-2/EBS Octabass/MXR BOD) - my favorite choice
Phaser, with or without fuzz
Wah (way back when I had a Weeping Demon) |

In the past I have also used a wah. I'm always running dirt, so that hardly warrents mentioning. |

But as a hypothetical, I'm going to give in to the dormant 6 stringer in me and say some extra grind with treble boost would be my first choice. |

Usually my solo tone is either my clean tone, or a really wet envelope filter tone. |

The overdrive adds some highs and the chorus is pretty ear-catching. I've got it set pretty extreme (super watery sounding) but with the fuzz going it just adds an airiness to the sound. Just enough to cut around some chunky guitar riffing. |

The newer model with the tone knob lets you dial in the low end, and I'll usually crank to some unwarranted level of fuzz-explosion.
Small Stone with a low rate is good for clean solos. I've used it with the rate maxed out and the SMMH to go for some weird No Quarter keyboard sounding stuff, but by that point, most everyone in the audience is tired of listening to my bass explorations. |

[cliche]
Fuzz
Wah
Reverb
[/cliche]
More specifically:
Zvex Mastotron
Morley Power Wah
Rocktron Cyborg
Unsurprisingly, that's for shoegaze/drone/ambient stuff.

I use my EBS Bass IQ to give me some FONK - and folks love it... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
