Preserving the low-end?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB,

Recently I started experimenting with light amounts of distortion on my bass with my band. All I have to work with for now is a BOSS DS-1. My problem is that I lose my tone. I've been looking into a few other pedals but my budget is a little restricting.

This pedal though, is in my price range. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it: http://www.ehx.com/products/muff-ove.../product-photo

My singer says over-drive, unlike distortion, just provides and boost so I won't lose any of my tone.

Is this true?

An effects loop on your amp or a blender pedal like the boss ls-2 line selector can help you with your trouble. you can try overdrive pedals like the electro-harmonix muff overdrive or the voodoo lab sparkle drive if you want, but blending your sound with these methods can help fix low-end losses. the voodoo lab sparkle drive wouldn't need any blending because that pedal contains a clean control which mixes the dry signal with the effected signal. there's a pedal I know that's a modded boss ds-1 designed for bass. that pedal would be a penny pedal modded ds-1 bass distortion pedal. that pedal can give you the distorted sounds of the boss ds-1 without obliterating low-end. here's the link to that pedal's website.

Hey, that looks like a cool idea! If the crossover were adjustable, it would be even better...

Cool.
Been looking at buying one of these myself!

So is the bottom end completely clean?
...and any idea what frequency is the cut\low-pass at?

How big is the pedal?

Do a search on overdrive pedals here - most of the recommended ones work pretty well on bass or are recommended for bass. My preference is the old version of the turbo RAT by proco

My favorites among dirt pedals with plenty low end are the Way Huge Pork Loin with 'clean' blend knob turned up and the MI Audio Tube Zone with 'tone' knob turned all the way down. There are plenty other pedals that I have yet to try though.

I haven't tried the Muff Overdrive.

Not true for all overdrive nor distortion pedals

Some effects are not made for bass. I've had the same issue as you did with the DS1. A cheap Ibanez PHAT HED solved that problem.
