Pro Co Rat Mod

I am new to pedals but recently got a Pro Co Rat for free. It is an older model and I think the former bass player had stolen it and our drummer had it sitting in his closet for a long time.

Generally, I haven't ever used pedals but I thought the sound was cool and that there were a couple songs it would work on. The problem--just like everyone says--it cuts out the lows.

After scouring TB I took a couple of ideas I found and put them together. Here is what I did and where I found the info:

1st I went here: http://www.diyguitaramp.com/rat.html. I took out the 47 ohm resistor and in its place I put 1K trim pot. This allows you to exchange gain in the high register for bass response. The nice thing is when turned all the way it is as if you made no mod at all--it almost sound stock.

2nd I went here: proco rat mods for bass . I didn't follow all of slinkp's mods as some of them seemed to be outside my skill level. What I did do was take out the .033 cap and replace it with a .022 cap and I took out a 1.6 resistor and replaced with a 10k resistor. Both located just off the filter pot.

The sound is very good. I still need to to some more playing on it but the bass response is definitely there. I found all the parts at radio shack and they didn't cost me more than $4.00 with tax.

Hope this helps someone. Have a great time.

IME Modding it won't really help. Blending it will.

Get one of these http://www.bargeconcepts.com/vbjr.html

Crank the volume on the RAT, then just blend in a tiny bit of it with your clean signal (doing it that way keeps the original signal strong, and just ADDs ... so its also a bit of a boost when you kick in your dirty tone).

Hey Pickles. Just picked up a Turbo Rat, how do you think it compares to the Agro (once blended)? Still kinda wish I'd gone for the dual channel Aguilar AG500 instead of the single channel version to mess about with the distortion, but know there's a ton of gigs where I have to use the house amp, making a pedal necessary.

P.S. Can't believe you're getting rid of the DB900!

Hope this isn't too much of a de-rail for this thread bluehevy75! Am very curious to see how the mods work out once you've tested it a bit more live etc. Let us know.

The Turbo is pretty cool, I'm still just getting to know it. I like it better than the Keeley RAT-2 I had. Theres still more squizz past 5k than I like to hear, but the filter knob seems to be able to tame it OK without loosing the 2k crunch too much.

The AGRO is amazing ... but despite all its EQ its just one sound, so I like messing with other things with other characters. I've got like 6 distortion pedals right now. Still, if you're going direct or through a hi-fi amp, its pretty much impossible to beat the AGRO.

I'm thinking I'll keep the DB900 after all actually. Its great for softening up a gnarly effected signal.
