I'm really happy with the way they've come together. Just for kicks, I took my bigger board to gospel band practice last night and my EP2 killed it... enough so that when I kicked it on, the drummer and the keyboard player looked at each other like they couldn't believe what I just did, which in turn immediately cemented the "secondary" board primary rights to that group. (thinking "out loud"...)
Hmm... Maybe if I end up not needing an octaver, I could get another EP2 and fit it on my Mini in place of the MXR/Proton? The DC Brick does have 18V out.............. Hmmmmmmmmmm.....! Seriously, the EP2 is my favorite filter EVAR, out of the 22 I've tried/owned!

This time around it's discussing my obsession - pitch effects! Shep on Bass - Signal Chain BASSics, Part VIII: Pitch Effects
It's been a long time since I published part VII as the interviews I've been doing have taken up so much time. I fully intend to get back on the ball with these though, along with a pile of pedal demos.

The Shimverb isn't in right now, as I had a problem with the power supply. It'll be back in soon enough in the SuperEgo's loop with the HOG. |

The Ana Echo is a very straight forward, no frills analog delay. I like that it has a very strong feedback so that you can get infinite delay and make some old-school 'psychedelic' sounds, which is fun for an intro to a song or two.
The Shimverb has a bit more character for itself. There's three reverb settings - Room, Spring and Shimmer. The room is utilitarian and functions well enough, but the 'size' of the room is set at medium. The Spring and the Shimmer are a bit cheap and cheesy, but good enough for me. The Shimmer setting is nice, but you're stuck with one sound where it tosses a 5th above whatever notes you're playing. The Spring setting sounds very digital, fake and 'off' from real spring reverb. I'd never use it in the studio. When playing live, I usually just want some generic reverb. This unit provides just that, and has the Shimmer as an added bonus.
If you're looking for a super versatile, high quality analog delay or reverb, these aren't them. However, if you only use either of them on occassion and want some very basic reverb and delay, these work great and take up very little room on your pedal board.

| | | | @ Naiko: Are you using the Artec EQ as a kind of clean boost? The EQ sliders all seem set to flat... Unless I am missing something, which is always a distinct possibility. Nice board.
In fact the last few pages have all been excellent, good job people!

5sg. | Thanks dude! I enjoy writing them... I just struggle to find the time at the moment.
Dirt is the next subject to tackle.

For a long time I was of the mindset that I wanted my sound as clean as possible, but things change of course... I've been finding ways to warm up my tone (like switching from Hartke aluminum cones to traditional 10's, then to 12's and on to 15's) and now I'm an overdrive connosseiur as well. I've tried 17 overdrives and still own 11 of them. Lol. I'm happiest with a nice warm "just barely there" overdrive to vintage up my tone. Could never get into fuzz though, couldn't get the effect to work for me and don't have a need for THAT much dirt anyway.
If you're interested, I'd be happy to contribute what I know about overdrives... Always love talking about gear!

5sg. | If you fancy shooting some specific video demos of certain aspects of OD and fuzz then they could certainly be helpful!
I'll have a think this week and get back to you.
Also...
This is what me and TaySte were playing around with this afternoon...
Impressive results!

I've got an EQD Rainbow Machine and a Digitech Bass Synth Wah on their way to me. I also have some major plans for my board coming up soon.
The MythFx Triton will be replaced by an EQD Hummingbird and Orbiter relatively soon and I plan on adding more synth stuff and a new loop switch as well.
Should be an interesting growth period in the next year!! |
