Real Bass Overdrive...

Has anybody ever plugged their bass into a vintage Fender Twin Reverb and turned it up to about 6?

For a while now I have been searching for an "overdrive" pedal that can do that type of sound. (think Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" or Stevie Wonder's "Uptight")

So far all I seem to have found are what I would classify as a bass "distortion" rather than more subtle "overdrive" as their names would suggest. Anybody else share this opinion?

Is there anything out there that can do what I'm talking about?
You know, emulate that of a bass through a moderately cranked twin...

p.s. I have also tried running my bass though some popular guitar overdrives, but it doesn't translate... not enough bottom, and the breakup is always too fizzy regardless of the setting.
Any help greatly appreciated

I'd go with that... I'm sure that by now, Johnk knows the sound of every variety of distortion known to TB.

The full tone OCD does this pretty well while retaining most of the bottom end
