Retrospec Squeezebox - Bad Tubes? Microphonic?
I have a Retrospec Squeezebox compressor and have noticed some odd behavior from it lately. I'm assuming it's the tubes but have no prior experience so here I am...
When I bump or tap the enclosure you can hear it through the amp/cab. It's relatively loud too, kind of like tapping a microphone. So much so that I can actually use it to emphasize the 2 and the 4 as I play. In reading up on microphonic tubes there is no mention of behavior like this but it's all in the context of amps, not compressors or effects pedals. Seems like it's a bad tube but nothing out there confirms it in my research.
The other thing that happens occasionally is that when I engage the switch it will be very noisy. I disengage and then engage again just a moment later it's perfectly quiet (well relatively). I have not moved the comp, nor have any of the conditions in the room changed (no new lights on, no TV or monitor on, nothing). I know it's a little sensitive to electrical noise but it's getting worse as the weeks go on, and it seems to be a little erratic compared to previous experience. Plus, in troubleshooting I can't contribute the excess noise to anything in the room/setup.
So, anyone have similar experience with tubes in their pedals or in general that can definitively attribute the odd behavior to a bad tube or both tubes? It's easy enough to get some new tubes and try it out but I figured someone might know for sure and perhaps this could be useful for someone else out there as I have found pretty little on the subject.
