Rivals of the Pork Loin?

I am currently on the hunt for a "light" overdrive pedal that is similar/ close to the tone of the Way Huge Pork Loin.

What is wrong with the PL? Nothing that has to do with its OD tone! its more of a size issue, its taking up some valuable real estate on my pt mini...

As you can tell from my WTB plug in my sig, I am really digging the TC Electronic Dark Matter:

Dark Matter - YouTube

I have a Rat Tail on order from Fuzzrocious to cover heavier Distortion, I've got a Wren and Cuff TFR for fuzz/muff. I'm just looking for a nice, small OD pedal now..

I was considering a Fuzzrocious Dark Driving, but I cannot find decent sound clips of the pedal to be able to make such a decision.

any thoughts?

Yep,

I was going to say Fulltone OCD, or you could try the Xotic Bass BB Preamp too, also a great pedal.....it would probably be the best one if you are running out of room on your pedalboard, it's definitely one of the smallest pedals

an OCD for cheap you say? very cool.

I did some YT searching and stumbled upon one of gearmandude's aka Jack Black demos( I've watched a BUNCH of his demos, I dig them):

Freekish Blues Alpha Driver versus Joyo Ultimate Drive comparison - YouTube

reading the video's comments and doing some research, I am surprised that such a controversy exists! more inexpensive pedals for us I guess!

I'll be looking into all these suggestions.

One question, have you guys tried the Pork Loin before?

I'd LLOVE to try an OSD but I'm not sure the size difference would change?
How well does the OCD retain low end?

I have a Rusty Box as a preamp at the moment, I'm not sure if there is such thing as preamp overkill but I don't want to shape my tone much anymore, I want to overdrive it..

do you have experience with these? rather with the red dragon? I'm not so much looking for fuzz. I do like the size though!

Well, I blend mine cuz im a fussy bugger. But it works fine without a blend, the tone knob is pretty good. And if you do go for an OCD, running at 18V makes a major difference! Also I use it with the HP toggle on, keeps lows intact pretty well, and it can get pretty dirty with the Drive knob all the way up.

Tried a pork loin instore once, not with my setup. it was great, but like you I wanted something smaller, plus i love the ocd's tone.

the BB preamp is a "preamp"....but it's more of a overdrive/distortion with eq added. which is good to roll some low end back in. it also is a really great clean boost too, just roll the gain all the way down. There are a few videos out there you should check out

I just sold an OCD for a pork loin. There is not a lot of low end loss with the OCD, it keeps it intact pretty well, as long as the tone is rolled back. I a/b'd the pedals and they are very similar in sound, I like the fact that the pork loin has a clean knob, and it keeps the tone a little warmer than the OCD

You just HAD to throw that in there

jk, I hear ya man. The PL does allow for a warmer tone, I just have to dig into the strings to get the OD tone to come through, I'm not sure if I like that about the PL yet. In my bedroom, it sounds killer. with the band not so much..

OCD is quite tempting, but if the JOYO UD is a legit copy of it, I might just as well try one. They are so inexpensive!

i haven't heard of that one before, are there any demos up on you tube???

you'll find the OCD can help drive your fuzz and dist pedals for an extra kick if needed aswell !!

but check out the mad professor blueberry aswell, as its a specific bass overdrive

Try the Fulltone Fat Drive. I got one to replace my Pork Loin because it is smaller and sounds pretty good as a light overdrive.
It has bass and treble controls.

I have a power brick en route to run mine at 18v so I'm pretty psyched. I had an OCD but it just was lacking something the SFT has IMO

I probably should have stuck to my Rat King plans... Turns out I don't need fuzz as much as I thought I did
(TFR Will possibly be on the market soon...)

welp, so far I do like the pedals that have the extra bass and treble controls...

I guess it'd be a matter of trying:
Xotic BB
Fulltone Fat Drive
TC Electronic Dark Matter

the JOYO Ultimate Drive (mostly cause its so inexpensive for being a good copy of the OCD)
