Question roland v-bass and yamaha motif rack...

Sign in to disble this ad
Dear Friends,

I've been using a roland V-Bass floor processor with a GK-3 midi pickup. Last week i bought a yamaha motif rack unit for my gear but i although i made correct midi connections, i couldn't get any sound from the motif. Does anybody know something about it?

Thanx

As far as I know the V-Bass does not transmit MIDI pitch data, just patch changes and CC events. You will need to get something that does true pitch to MIDI translation if you want to play sounds from the Motif using your bass as a controller.

+1

For what you want you'll have to get a midi to pitch converter like a ROLAND GI-10, Yamaha G50,.....

I'm working on a similar issue right now. I've had a midi pickup on a backup bass for a while going into a pitch to midi converter (I'm currently using the Yamaha G50). I recently started to play with my V-bass more and I am looking at a combined solution. Axon makes some of the best pitch to midi converters these days.

To use the V-bass at the same time (or just without re-patching) you'll need a GK splitter box. I think they still make a 1 in 2 out box, or if you're going off the wall try the 1 in 4 out
The previous poster is correct about the Midi aspects of the V-bass.

I am curious as to how well you like the tracking with your set up? What bass is the pickup on? I've had the older Roland and the Yamaha, and I just think I need a dedicated system (iGuitar or maybe the hex option on the Lightwave basses). Godin makes an acoustic fretless with a synth driver, but I haven't tried it yet. I might buy the Roland internal kit if I hear the new GK3 you're using is much better than the older ones.

That's right, the V-Bass doesn't use MIDI for it's sound generation at all.

The GK pickups are essentially all the same, IME. I had a GK2-b on my fretted 6, then I installed the GK-KIT-BG. Works just the same.
Also I have the RMC piezo setup on my 9-string, which works pretty much the same as the GK pickups. Some difference could be heard on the V-Bass (slightly more sensitive to the highest harmonics) but tracking on the MIDI (I use a GR-20) was very much the same as the GK pickups.
