Roland VB-99 users: Can you use custom samples?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been reading up on the VB-99 lately and what i'm most curious about but can't find any info on is if you can create and import your own samples with the editor that they include.

Specifically, i would like to sample certain instruments like a mellotron and be able to use those sound samples with the VB-99.

Is this possible with the system?

Thanks!

No. You could connect to a sampler via MIDI but you'd end up with the same latency issues that you have with any Bass to MIDI system. The COSM basses in the VB-99 have very little latency. Bass to MIDI is a different story.

The VB99 is a "closed system" , the synth section is called COSM , it's an analysis of the analog (pickup) sound and transformed on the fly. There is no MIDI implied in the process.

A sampler on the other hand needs a "Note on/ Note off" info to trig the sample and that implies the Pitch to MIDI world , wich is a nightmare for us bass players.

Do a search here on pitch to MIDI , there were numerous threads and discussions.

Good luck.

BTW: you can do a Mellotron-ish type of sound with the VB99.
PM me , I'll send you a sample.
