A passive tone knob will work but it would be like shaving your face with a guillotine. When you say "an EQ", remember that EQ encompasses everything from the widest-band, most tone-smashing device to the narrowest, most precise notch filter. Being afraid of "an EQ" is like being afraid of "amps" just because
some amps won't have the tone you want.
Noise exists primarily in the frequency range from 18-30 KHz, so a notch filter cutting around 20 KHz is usually all it takes to kill hiss. That's how many noise suppressors work. Noise
gates, like the guy above mentioned, turn down the volume
between your notes, which reduces the amount that the noise is noticed.
